New Florida law allows pharmacists to sell naloxone without a prescription

Gov. Rick Scott of Florida signed into law in 2016 a measure that allows pharmacists to dispense naloxone without a physician’s prescription. Under HB 1241, which was cosponsored by Sen. Denise Grimsley and Rep. Rene Plasencia, pharmacists can dispense naloxone much as they dispense epi-pens for individuals with allergies or influenza vaccines.

Results of County-wide Efforts to Decrease Prescription Drug Related Overdose Deaths

In 2008-Sarasota County had the 6th highest prescription drug death rate in the state of Florida.

In 2009-Sarasota County had the 8th highest prescription drug death rate in the state of Florida.

In 2012-Sarasota County had the 11th highest prescription drug death rate in the state of Florida.

 

 

Results of County-wide Efforts to Decrease Prescription Drug Related Overdose Deaths

Since the passing of the pain clinic ordinance in 2011, unintentional prescription drug deaths in Sarasota County decreased by 22% in 2012 and maintained the same standing in the year 2013.

Of the 66 drug related deaths in Sarasota County, 46 deaths represent accident deaths. This total shows an 8% decrease from the 2012 accidental drug related deaths.
